Damavand is a potentially active stratovolcano, the highest mountain in Iran and is located between Tehran and the Caspian Sea in the Alborz Mountains (not to be confused with the volcano Elbrus in the Caucasus). The highest volcano in Asia and the Northern Hemisphere has a special significance in Persian mythology. Incidentally, in the Tibetan Kunlun Mountains there are a number of volcanic cones, the highest elevation of which is still somewhat higher than the summit of Damavand. However, the peaks of this volcanic group are only considered pyroclastic cones and their prominence is also less than 300 meters. Therefore, they are not among the highest volcanic peaks on earth and Damavand is entitled to the title of the highest volcano in Asia.
